Broadway music director and software engineer Cynthia Meng leads a workshop on coding for musicians.

“A lot of the programs we use as musicians (Finale, Sibelius, MainStage, Ableton) allow for a user to write custom plug-ins, or scripts. Using scripts can save you time/effort in the long run. To write these scripts, you need to understand some basic concepts of programming aka “coding.” My thought is that we could use most of the class to hone in on a particular use case: writing a custom plug-in in Finale. I can give a broad overview of some basic programming language, walk through a few example plug-ins, and write a useful script from scratch. And then I can also spend a few minutes showing a few other examples of how scripting can be applied in the other programs.” — Cynthia Meng
