Always loved this song when it came out in the autumn of 1975 … one of the last big Philadelphia soul songs still done in the early 70’s style. By this time it was almost all disco and funk, so it was very nice to hear. Something I didn’t know until now … the alternative title for this song was “They Just Can’t Stop It (The Games People Play).”
Released in August 1975, it peaked at #1 on the US Hot Soul Singles Chart, at #5 on Billboard, and at #2 on Cash Box on October 25, 1975.
“Games People Play” is reasonably contemporary with the film Taxi Driver (1976) which I used for the video. The movie actually yielded some nice romantic, even comedic, footage, thanks to the charming on screen chemistry between Robert De Niro and Cybill Shepherd (charming for the most part). New York City Was in the midst of a heat wave during much of the filming according to Wikipedia … I agree with that as I was there in late June 1976 when it was 100 degrees at midnight. Great scenes and images from another time.
